The lifeboat launched to assist a 6ft inflatable dinghy which had broken down off Leysdown, Isle of Sheppey.

The lifeboat crew located the dinghy ¾ mile offshore. There were five people on board, including two children and a 9 month old baby.

The occupants of the craft were brought onboard the lifeboat , along with their craft and its engine. The lifeboat then took them back to the beach, as close as depth of water would allow, and they were then transferred back into their dinghy which was walked ahore by two members of the lifeboat crew, and met by the Sheppey Coastguard.

Whitstable Lifeboat Helmsman Dave Parry said “When we arrived at the scene the dinghy was being steadily blown offshore in the wind. The children were transferred first to the lifeboat and complained of feeling cold , so were wrapped in a thermal blanket. Fortunately there were no other injuries and we were soon able to land them back onshore”.

The occupants of the dinghy came from the Medway area.
