Whitstable’s Atlantic 85 Lifeboat Lewisco was called to two incidents on Sunday afternoon.
At 3.40 pm, whilst already at sea on exercise, the crew was informed that a light aircraft, taking part in a display at the Herne Bay Airshow, had ditched in the sea close inshore off Beltinge.
As the lifeboat arrived on scene the aircraft and pilot had been brought safely ashore by members of the public. An ambulance was requested, whilst two crew were landed ashore to ascertain the pilot’s condition, . The crew assessed that he had not suffered any major injuries, and the lifeboat was subsequently released from the incident to continue on exercise.
At 6.10pm, shortly after having returned to station, the lifeboat was requested to launch again to assist a 25ft motor cruiser which had broken down in the Swale.
The crew located the craft on a mooring at Harty Ferry. The craft was taken under tow by the lifeboat as far as Fowley Island, where Sheerness Inshore Lifeboat took over, to take the vessel to Queenborough.
This brings the total number of “shouts” for Whitstable Lifeboat so far this year to 34.
